Technical Assistance

For technical assistance about any part of FSMA, the FDA has set up a technical assistance network (TAN). The TAN…

provides technical assistance to industry, regulators, academia, consumers and others regarding FSMA implementation. The TAN addresses questions related to the FSMA rules, programs, and implementation strategies.

Anyone can submit a question to the TAN, and it will be reviewed and answered based on the structure of the TAN. Submit a question to the TAN.

In addition to the FDA’s TAN, the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA) has set up their own TAN. Find information about the FSPCA TAN, and submit questions for review.

Hazard Analysis Help

Performing a thorough hazard analysis is vital to implementing a successful food safety plan. There are many great resources available that help in the hazard analysis step of creating a food safety plan.

Reportable Food Registry

The Reportable Food Registry (RFR) is an online resource that was established in 2007 to track patterns of adulteration in food. The annual reports published by the RFR are great resources to examine hazards that have been recently associated with a specific food product or product type. Lean about the overall goals of the RFR and access annual reports.

FDA Hazards Guide

As a part of a guidance document, the FDA has published an appendix titled “Potential Hazards for Foods and Processes”. This 234 page document contains information about potential biological, chemical, and physical hazards that are either food or process related. The document focuses on 17 specific food categories such as bakery, dairy, and snack foods.

FDA Recall notices

The FDA collects information about recent and ongoing food recalls of FDA regulated products. This information is open to the public, and can be received via email subscription.

CDC Reports

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reports that trace foodborne illness to specific hazards and commodities.

Pathogen modeling programs

These resources predict how specific pathogens will persist, grow, and multiply in specific food products processed or held under certain conditions. ComBase, as well as the USDA, have developed useful and accepted pathogen modeling programs.
