Hazard Analysis Draft Guidance for Food for Animals Now Available

Last month, FDA distributed a Draft Guidance (#245) for Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals, which is now open for comment. This guidance is helpful for those who have never created a food safety plan and for facilities who have an existing HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) plan in place already.

This 169-page document is a thorough layout of the required and optional components of a food safety plan, and also contains frequently asked questions. In addition to these components, there is also an example list of potential reasonably foreseeable hazards and explanations. Though the list may not be exhaustive, it gives you a good starting point.

For those who have completed the Preventive Controls for Animal Food course, this guidance offers a refresher of the information found in the course manual.

For those who have not completed the Preventive Controls for Animal Food course, this guidance document in addition to the PCAF course are good starting points when developing a food safety plan for the first time.

In addition to this guidance document, FDA announced they will host an Informational Webinar on FSMA Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals Draft Guidance. The webinar will be held on March 6, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. (EST). Registration for this webinar is not required and it will be available as a recording afterward.
